Chapter Five

“Yes, I saw the first letter,” said Sally. “Jenny told me that it fell out of a book she had bought at the station when she came down to visit us. Of course I found it strange at the time, but then I forgot all about it to be honest. Why didn’t she phone me when she received others? She always used to tell me everything.”

“I only wish we could ask her,” replied her mother.

“Well, I’ll go up and see her now. Perhaps I can get through to her,” suggested Sally.

“If only you can,” concluded Mrs Paget as she made her way to the kitchen.

Sally opened the bedroom door and looked over to the bed. To her amazement it was empty and then she saw her sister standing at the window with her arms out-stretched and looking out onto the road below.

“What are you looking at Jenny?” Asked her sister breezily.

Her sister didn’t move so Sally walked over and put her arm round her waist. Jenny turned slowly her eyes blank and then a voice spoke.

“Oh Mary, he’s gone to London. I love him so much I want him back.”

Sally nervously looked around her, but she knew the voice was Jenny’s. It had come from her, however her lips had never moved. Jenny left her place at the window, her eyes were still vacant as she lowered herself on to the bed and the voice came again from the motionless lips,

“Oh Peter, come back.”

The room descended into total silence. Sally stared open mouthed at her sister as a cold shiver ran down her spine. She went over and kissed Jenny. Visibly shaking she left the room and went downstairs.

“But I swear, her lips never moved and she called me Mary,” emphasised Sally as she recounted her experience to the rest of the family as they gathered around the table in the kitchen.

Her husband David, was the first to respond from the stony-faced group,

“I would have a word with the Vicar; this really seems like the supernatural to me. Perhaps he’ll perform an exorcism.”

“Oh, come on that is a bit extreme isn’t it? David, I have always thought of you as steady and rational, after all this is Fen Sutton not Amityville. Anyhow, I can’t see old Duff casting out any spirits unless it’s a double gin down at the Green Man,” sneered Alan Paget.

“Well, it frightens me,” sobbed Sally. “I’ve never seen anyone like this and from what you tell me the Doctor isn’t getting anywhere.”

A knock at the door made them all jump, and when David answered it, he found Richard on the doorstep.

“Come on in Richard, I am afraid there is little change.”

“Hello Sally, long time no see,” said Richard as he joined the family at the table.

Sally smiled but said nothing in reply.

Mrs Paget filled Richard in on Sally’s experience with Jenny and then asked, “Did you get anywhere with the letters you borrowed a couple of days ago?”

“I took them to the Museum in March yesterday and showed them to the curator.
